UN Chief Calls for Accountability After 300 Aid Workers killed in Gaza
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the lack of accountability for the deaths of nearly 300 aid workers, two-thirds of whom were UN employees, in Gaza, calling it “unacceptable,” Khaama Press reported yesterday.
He urged for a thorough investigation, stating, “We have courts, but we see that court decisions are not respected, and this kind of impunity is entirely unacceptable.”
In a recent incident, six UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) staff members were killed during Israeli airstrikes on a school in central Gaza, marking the deadliest attack on the agency’s personnel. Hamas officials reported that at least 18 individuals, including UN staff, lost their lives in the strikes, which the Israeli military claimed targeted a Hamas command center.
Since the onset of the Israel-Hamas conflict on October 7, 2022, Gaza has become increasingly perilous for aid workers.
