Nigeria’s military announced that it has killed a senior commander of the extremist group Boko Haram along with 10 other militants during a night raid in the northeastern Borno State, The Associated Press reported. The operation is part of ongoing efforts to counter insurgency and restore security in the region.
According to an army statement, Abu Khalid, described as the second-in-command for Boko Haram in the Sambisa Forest and a key figure responsible for coordinating operations and logistics, was killed during the operation. The raid took place late Saturday in the Komala area of Konduga Local Government Area.
Troops involved in the operation also recovered weapons, food supplies and medical materials, and no casualties were reported among Nigerian forces. Military officials emphasized that clearance operations continue across insurgent strongholds, including the Sambisa Forest and other key areas.
Boko Haram, an Islamist extremist group that launched its insurgency in northeastern Nigeria in 2009, has long been responsible for widespread violence, including attacks on civilians, military targets and infrastructure. Its activities have also spilled into neighboring countries, contributing to insecurity and displacement across the Lake Chad Basin.
The army’s announcement marks another significant tactical success for Nigerian forces amid ongoing regional security efforts, even as insurgent attacks continue to pose challenges in the northeast.
