At Least 50 Killed in Mosque Attack in Northern Nigeria

At least 50 worshippers were killed and several others injured when armed assailants attacked a mosque in northern Nigeria’s Katsina state on Tuesday, news outlets reported. The incident occurred around 04:00 GMT in Unguwan Mantau, a remote community in the Malumfashi local government area, as Muslims gathered for morning prayers.

No group immediately claimed responsibility, but such attacks have increased in northwestern and north-central Nigeria, where clashes between local herders and farmers over land and water access are common.

Previous assaults have killed and injured dozens, including a June attack in Yelwata, Benue State, which left more than 100 people dead, prompting calls from Amnesty International to end the ongoing violence.

Following Tuesday’s shooting, the Katsina state authorities deployed army and police units to the area to prevent further attacks. Officials noted that gunmen often hide in crops during the rainy season to ambush communities, heightening the risks for residents.
