Nigeria’s former president, Muhammadu Buhari, has died at age 82 in London while receiving medical treatment, his press secretary confirmed Sunday. Buhari led Nigeria twice — first as a military ruler in the 1980s and later as the first opposition candidate to win a democratic election in 2015.

His presidency, which ended in 2023, faced widespread insecurity, economic troubles, and persistent corruption. Current President Bola Tinubu has ordered flags at half-staff and a national mourning period. Buhari, from Nigeria’s Muslim north, rose to power on promises to end violence and clean up graft, but left office with public disappointment.
