A suicide bombing carried out by a woman in Nigeria’s Borno state has killed at least 20 members of an anti-jihadist group, local fighters told AFP on Saturday, Arab News reported. The attack occurred late Friday in the town of Konduga, about 40 kilometers from Maiduguri, the state capital.

According to group leader Tijjani Ahmed, the attacker detonated explosives strapped to her body near a shed where militia members were gathered beside the town’s fish market, a location frequently targeted in past attacks. Eighteen people died instantly, while two others succumbed to injuries in the hospital. Another 18 were injured.

Police have confirmed 10 fatalities but acknowledged the death toll may be higher as more details emerge. Konduga had seen a lull in such incidents over the past year. However, the region has long suffered from violence linked to Boko Haram, an armed Islamist group active in northeast Nigeria for over 16 years.

The ongoing conflict has claimed more than 40,000 lives and displaced around two million people, according to the United Nations. Violence has also spilled into neighboring Chad, Niger, and Cameroon, prompting regional military cooperation to counter the insurgency.
