Over 100 killed in deadly attack on Nigerian village, Amnesty reports
…………….
At least 100 people were killed in a gun attack on the village of Yelewata in Benue State, Nigeria, according to Amnesty International. The incident occurred between Friday evening and Saturday morning, with the group reporting that many victims were burned inside their homes. Dozens are still missing, and hundreds were injured, lacking access to adequate medical care.
While police confirmed an attack in the area, they did not disclose casualty figures. Amnesty described the violence as part of an “alarming escalation” of deadly assaults in Benue State, blaming government inaction for rising insecurity.
The region, part of Nigeria’s central “middle belt,” frequently witnesses clashes between farmers and herders over land and resources. In recent months, similar attacks have claimed dozens of lives in Benue and neighboring Plateau State. Observers warn that ongoing tensions and lack of accountability could lead to further loss of life without urgent intervention.
