At least 151 people, including many children, have died following severe flooding in Mokwa, a town in Nigeria’s northern Niger state, the CNN reported. The floods, triggered by heavy rainfall early Thursday, submerged homes in the Kpege neighborhood while residents were asleep.

More than 3,000 people have been displaced, and the death toll may rise as search operations continue, according to the state’s emergency agency spokesperson, Ibrahim Hussaini. Among the victims was the family of Mokwa resident Hassan Abdullahi, who lost nine relatives. “We lost everything,” he said, describing the devastation.

The Niger state government called the incident “heartbreaking” and confirmed that two communities were worst affected. Nigeria’s disaster management agency, NEMA, noted the country faces frequent annual flooding. In recent years, flooding has caused hundreds of deaths and displaced thousands, including more than 600 fatalities in 2022—Nigeria’s worst flooding disaster in over a decade.
