2 Million Displaced After Devastating Floods in Nigeria
Nearly two million people remain displaced following severe floods that struck Maiduguri, Borno State, on September 10-11, Anadolu Agency reported yesterday.
Governor Babagana Zulum reported that many victims are still living in government-established camps, with significant infrastructure damage affecting the region.
The floods have claimed at least 40 lives, prompting local authorities to distribute money, food, and essential items to those in need. Zulum assured that a recent donation of N1 billion (approximately $600 million) from a Nigerian bank would be used solely for rehabilitation and resettlement efforts.
However, economic activities in the city have yet to resume, according to Bulana Abiso, head of a civil society coalition. Many victims are grappling with trauma and loss, struggling to recover from the disaster. Support from various donors, including Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has been mobilized to aid the affected population.
