125 Boko Haram Insurgents Convicted in Nigeria’s Mass Trial

Nigerian courts have convicted 125 Boko Haram militants and financiers for various terrorism-related offenses in a recent mass trial, Reuters reported yesterday citing the country’s attorney-general’s office.

This insurgency, ongoing since 2009, has resulted in thousands of deaths and millions displaced in northeastern Nigeria, creating a severe humanitarian crisis, the article mentioned.

The spokesperson, Kamarudeen Ogundele, noted that the convictions included charges of terrorism, financing terrorism, and providing material support.

Previous mass trials occurred between 2017 and 2018, resulting in 163 convictions. Of those convicted in earlier trials, 400 have been transferred to a rehabilitation center for deradicalization and reintegration. The latest breakdown revealed that 85 were convicted for financing terrorism, 22 for crimes related to the International Criminal Court, with the rest charged for terrorism.
