Separatist Attack Kills 11 in Southeastern Nigeria

A separatist group has launched a deadly assault on a military checkpoint in Abia State, southeastern Nigeria, Al Jazeera reported yesterday citing the military.

The attack, which the military blamed on the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) movement, resulted in the deaths of at least 11 people – 6 civilians and 5 soldiers.

The army has vowed a fierce response, pledging to apply “overwhelming military pressure” to decisively defeat the separatist group. However, IPOB denied responsibility, attributing the attack to “politically motivated criminals.”

Tensions remain high in Nigeria’s southeast, where IPOB is pushing for an independent state for the Igbo ethnic group.
