Nine Students Kidnapped from Nigerian University

On Friday, the Kogi state government reported that gunmen had kidnapped at least nine students from their classrooms at the Confluence University of Science and Technology in northern Nigeria, the Reuters reported yesterday.

This latest incident underscores the widespread insecurity plaguing the country, as armed gangs continue to target schools, villages, and motorists for ransom.

A search and rescue operation by security forces and local hunters is currently underway. Kidnapping of students first emerged as a tactic used by the militant group Boko Haram, but has since been adopted by various criminal organizations seeking financial gain.

The abduction highlights the ongoing challenges Nigeria faces in protecting its citizens, particularly in the vulnerable education sector.
