UN Chief Calls on World Leaders to Invest in Fighting Poverty

UN Secretary‑General António Guterres has urged global leaders to prioritise investment in fighting poverty and reducing military spending as the world enters 2026, Anadolu Agency reported. In his New Year’s message, Guterres highlighted the stark imbalance between soaring defence budgets and underfunded humanitarian needs, urging nations to focus on people and sustainable development.
“As we enter the new year, the world stands at a crossroads,” Guterres said, stressing that a safer world begins by investing more in fighting poverty and less in fighting wars. He added that available resources could lift lives, support justice, heal the planet, and secure peace if used wisely.
The UN chief’s appeal comes amid record global military expenditure — about $2.7 trillion in 2025, significantly exceeding global development aid. Guterres called on leaders everywhere to “choose people and planet over pain” and for collective action towards greater equity and peace.
