United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres held a series of meetings with regional and world leaders on Sunday to discuss global crises and opportunities for cooperation, according to a report by Anadolu Agency. The discussions took place ahead of the UN General Assembly’s High-level Week.
Guterres met with Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit to explore enhanced collaboration in addressing regional challenges, with a focus on crises in Gaza, Syria, and Sudan. He also held discussions with Finnish President Alexander Stubb, centering on global geopolitical trends and the UN’s role in peace mediation.
In a separate meeting with Botswana’s President Duma Gideon Boko, Guterres discussed reforming the international financial architecture and expanding cooperation between the UN and Botswana. He commended the nation’s commitment to advancing UN priorities, including development and peacebuilding initiatives.
The UN chief also met with the new U.S. Ambassador to the UN, Michael Waltz. Guterres praised America’s foundational role in the UN, stating that its political and financial support has been “crucial” and is one of the “pillars of international cooperation.”
The 80th UN General Assembly’s High-level Week is scheduled to begin on Tuesday and will run through September 29.
