UN Secretary-General Calls for Renewed Global Unity and Urgent Action on Crises

As the United Nations marks its 80th anniversary, Secretary-General António Guterres has issued a dual plea to world leaders, urging both renewed global unity and immediate action to tackle a converging set of crises, Anadolu Agency reported.

In an address at the UN headquarters in New York, Guterres described the organization as a “living legacy” sustained by its staff, including peacekeepers and humanitarians. He pointed to the UN’s past achievements, such as preventing wars and improving global health, and stressed the historical precedent of humanity coming together to overcome challenges in times of crisis and division.

However, Guterres’s call for unity comes with an urgent warning. Speaking ahead of a high-level meeting of the General Assembly, he highlighted that wars, climate change, inequality, and technological risks have all escalated into a “global crisis” that demands coordinated efforts.

According to a report citing Al Jazeera, the Secretary-General noted that geopolitical divides are hindering the resolution of conflicts. He also underscored the dire financial situation of many developing nations, which are struggling with debt and lack access to affordable funding.

Guterres’s message emphasized the need for member states and citizens to strengthen multilateral cooperation and to honor the UN’s mission by ensuring its continued growth. He concluded by urging everyone to preserve this “living legacy” for the benefit of all.
