The resumed second session of the United Nations Habitat Assembly concluded on May 31 in Nairobi with the adoption of the UN-Habitat Strategic Plan 2026-2029, aimed at tackling the global housing crisis, Xinhua reported. Over 1,300 delegates, including ministers, urban planners, and innovators from 193 UN member states, participated in the two-day event.
The assembly also elected a new presidency shared by Malaysia and the UAE for 2025-2029, alongside 36 Executive Board members.
The plan focuses on improving access to housing, land, clean water, and sanitation while supporting green innovation, poverty eradication, and climate action. UN-Habitat Executive Director Anaclaudia Rossbach highlighted the importance of political commitment, innovative financing, partnerships, and technology for implementation.
Additionally, the 13th World Urban Forum will take place in Baku, Azerbaijan, in May 2026, under the theme “Housing the world: Safe and resilient cities and communities.”
