A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck near Lima, Peru, on Sunday, resulting in one death and at least 36 injuries, according to government officials. The tremor triggered landslides and disrupted public services across the capital.
The National Seismological Center reported the quake occurred just before noon, with its epicenter located approximately 30 kilometers from the port city of Callao, adjacent to Lima. The U.S. Geological Survey measured the quake at a magnitude of 5.6.
Authorities confirmed that a man in Lima was killed when a wall collapsed onto his car. Emergency services reported dozens of injuries in the city, while no tsunami warning was issued. Television footage showed landslides in various parts of Lima, and the earthquake led to a temporary halt in subway services.
Peru, situated along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” is prone to frequent seismic activity. The country experiences over 100 measurable earthquakes annually. The deadliest in recent history occurred in 1970 in Ancash, claiming around 67,000 lives.
