Global Encyclopedia of Muslim Communities Project Launched to Document Muslims’ History, Realities Worldwide

The “Muslim Communities Around the World Encyclopedia” project is being developed as a global knowledge initiative aimed at creating a comprehensive reference on Muslim societies outside the Islamic world.

According to IQNA, the project seeks to document the history, demographic conditions, cultural heritage, institutions, personalities, and social experiences of Muslim communities through a unified research framework that includes local researchers, scholars, and experts from each community.

The encyclopedia will begin by producing independent profiles of selected Muslim communities, covering topics such as the arrival and spread of Islam, population distribution, educational and cultural institutions, women and youth issues, coexistence, achievements, and challenges.

Each community will have a local coordinator responsible for connecting the project team with researchers, institutions, and available sources. Field visits may also be conducted to gather information from mosques, libraries, archives, scholars, and community organizations.

After academic and editorial review, each community profile will be published digitally and updated annually to incorporate new information and corrections. Future plans include organizing the entries into regional volumes covering Asia, Africa, Europe, the Americas, and Australia.

Organizers said the initiative aims to create a continuously updated global knowledge base that allows Muslim communities to document their own histories and contribute directly to preserving their collective memory and experiences.
