The international community marked World Social Work Day on March 17, recognizing the vital role of social workers in promoting social justice and supporting vulnerable populations worldwide. Observed annually on the third Tuesday of March, the day highlights the contributions of professionals who assist individuals and families facing social and economic challenges.

According to the International Federation of Social Workers, the occasion underscores the importance of social work in advancing human development, protecting dignity, and strengthening public awareness of the profession’s role in addressing complex global issues.

This year’s observance coincided with Ramadan, a period that emphasizes compassion, generosity, and support for those in need, adding further significance to the work of social workers. Religious teachings also highlight the importance of social solidarity and assisting vulnerable groups.

The Qur’an stresses charity and mutual support, stating in Surah Al-Hadid (57:7): “Believe in Allah and His Messenger and spend out of that in which He has made you successors. For those who have believed among you and spent, there will be a great reward.”

Teachings attributed to Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) also emphasize that helping others and supporting the disadvantaged are key signs of compassion and genuine faith.

Experts note that these religious and ethical principles align closely with the core mission of social work, reinforcing its importance in fostering social cohesion, supporting families, and promoting justice. They stress that strengthening the profession remains essential to addressing growing social challenges and building more inclusive and resilient communities.
