Following the historic primary win of Democratic candidate for New York City mayor, Shaheen Mamdani, a group of U.S. lawmakers and civil rights organizations condemned a surge of Islamophobic and racist attacks targeting him, media outlets reported.

In a joint statement, Representatives Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar, André Carson, and LaTisha Simmons denounced inflammatory remarks from some Republican officials and far-right figures, highlighting the persistence of prejudice in U.S. politics. Mamdani, 33, of Indian-Muslim heritage, defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the June 24 primary with 43.5% of first-choice votes.

Critics linked him unfairly to the 9/11 attacks, prompting warnings from civil rights groups about the dangers of such rhetoric. Mamdani will face Republican Curtis Sliwa in the general election on November 4. A victory would make him New York City’s first Muslim mayor and the first of Indian descent.
