Pope Leo XIV is embarking on his first visit to a European Union member state, traveling to Spain for a week-long trip that includes visits to religious centers and meetings with migrants in the Canary Islands.
The visit comes amid ongoing concerns over migration and the fate of thousands of refugees navigating dangerous routes to Europe. According to Reuters, the Pope will be in various Spanish cities from June 6 to 12, concluding the trip in Tenerife and Gran Canaria to meet migrants and humanitarian organizations.
Church sources say the visit sends a message of solidarity and support for those who risk their lives crossing the Atlantic to reach Europe. In 2025, more than 3,000 people died attempting to reach the Canary Islands.
Hundreds of thousands are expected to attend events during the visit. Pope Leo will also address the Spanish Parliament, sharing his views on humanitarian and social issues.
