UN: Mediterranean Migrant Deaths Near 1,000 in Early 2026

Nearly 1,000 migrants have died or gone missing in the Mediterranean Sea since the start of 2026, marking one of the deadliest beginnings to a year on record, according to the International Organization for Migration.

The agency reported that at least 990 deaths have been recorded so far this year, with around 765 fatalities occurring in the Central Mediterranean route alone, significantly higher than the same period in 2025.

In the past 10 days, more than 180 people are feared dead or missing following a series of shipwrecks. In one of the latest incidents, over 80 migrants went missing after a boat carrying about 120 people capsized in rough weather off the coast of Libya. Dozens of survivors were rescued and taken to the Italian island of Lampedusa, a key entry point for migrants heading to Europe.

Another recent shipwreck left at least 19 people dead, while dozens more — including women and children — were rescued, some in critical condition.

The IOM warned that the rising death toll highlights the ongoing dangers of migration routes across the Mediterranean, often used by people fleeing conflict, poverty and instability, particularly via Libya.

IOM Director General Amy Pope called for urgent action, stressing the need to save lives, combat human trafficking networks, and expand safe and legal migration pathways.
