UK Sees Surge in Channel Crossings After Weeks-Long Pause
……..

More than 700 migrants crossed the English Channel in small boats on Saturday, ending a four-week pause in arrivals, according to official figures, the BBC reported. Data from the Home Office shows the latest crossings have pushed the total number of people making the journey this year to 40,029, exceeding the figure recorded for the whole of last year.

The previous arrivals were logged on 14 November, marking the longest continuous gap in crossings since records began in 2018. Poor winter weather is believed to have contributed to the temporary decline, as December is typically a quieter period for Channel journeys.

The increase comes as the UK government steps up efforts to curb irregular migration, although officials acknowledge the impact of recent measures may take time to be felt. Last week, Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy held talks with European counterparts on potential changes to the European Convention on Human Rights to facilitate deportations.

Separately, the Home Office has announced reforms to the asylum system, including time-limited refugee status and reviews every 30 months. Under the UK’s return arrangement with France, more than 150 people had been sent back by late November, as authorities continue to emphasize enforcement measures aimed at reducing crossings.
