MP Mahua Moitra Condemns Detention of Nine Bengali Muslim Migrant Workers in Chhattisgarh

Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra has condemned the detention of nine Bengali Muslim migrant laborers by Chhattisgarh police, describing it as “state-sponsored kidnapping,” Muslim Mirror reported.
The workers, employed as masons at a private school construction site in Albedapada, Bastar region, were detained on July 12 by Kondagaon police for allegedly staying without submitting required documents.
Moitra asserted that all nine had valid documentation and were working under a contractor. She accused the police of detaining them without notifying the West Bengal government or their families and denying them legal access or phone calls. The men were reportedly held in Jagdalpur jail.
A habeas corpus petition was filed in the Chhattisgarh High Court, and the workers were released Monday evening after district administration intervention. Verification confirmed they are Indian citizens from Nadia district, West Bengal.
Moitra’s criticism reflects wider concerns over the treatment of Bengali-speaking Muslim migrant workers in BJP-ruled states, amid allegations of politically motivated crackdowns.
