Greece Detains Over 1,200 Migrants Amid Surge from Libya
………………..
Greek authorities report detaining more than 1,200 migrants on Crete and the nearby islet of Gavdos over three days, following increased arrivals from Libya, according to local officials, the Independent reported. The coast guard intercepted multiple boats off Crete’s southern coast from Saturday to Monday, prompting calls for intensified patrols. Since the start of the year, about 8,000 migrants have reached Crete.
The surge coincided with a visit by Greece’s foreign minister to Libya for talks aimed at addressing the migration crisis and maritime disputes. Government officials warn that Crete and its residents face significant strain and that stricter measures may be necessary if diplomatic efforts fail.
Migrants often undertake the dangerous 350-kilometer journey in unsafe vessels, with Gavdos overwhelmed by arrivals and abandoned boats littering its beaches. Some migrants report mistreatment by smugglers during the voyage.
European Commissioner Magnus Brunner plans to visit Libya with officials from Greece, Italy, and Malta to urge stronger action against migrant departures.
