The U.S. Supreme Court has approved a decision allowing the federal government to revoke temporary residency status for more than 500,000 migrants, raising serious humanitarian and legal concerns.

The ruling, issued on Friday, May 30, came without a signed opinion or explanation, effectively backing a Trump policy to terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for these migrants—even though many entered the U.S. under a program initiated by former President Joe Biden’s administration.

Affected individuals include migrants from countries facing severe humanitarian and security crises such as Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela. Despite ongoing legal proceedings related to their immigration status, they now face the risk of deportation.

Liberal justices Ketanji Brown Jackson and Sonia Sotomayor warned that the ruling could upend the lives of hundreds of thousands, arguing that these migrants have not been given sufficient opportunity to complete legal pathways to remain in the U.S.
