More than 10,000 migrants lost their lives in Spanish waters
In 2024, over 10,000 migrants lost their lives attempting to reach Spain via sea, Khaama Press reported citing Spain’s Migration Rights Group, Caminando Fronteras. This alarming figure marks a significant increase from 2023, where the daily average of deaths was around 18, now rising to approximately 30.
Notably, 9,757 fatalities occurred while crossing the Atlantic Ocean towards the Canary Islands. Additionally, 131 boats have gone missing without a trace. The report attributes 69% of these tragic incidents to the lack of search and rescue efforts by authorities.
Spain’s geographical position makes it a primary entry point for illegal migration to Europe, highlighting the desperate conditions faced by many seeking a better life. The situation underscores the urgent need for comprehensive migration policies and international cooperation to protect vulnerable migrants and address the root causes of this crisis effectively.
