WFP Warns Over 33 Million Facing Hunger in MENA Amid Conflict and Displacement

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) issued a stark warning on Thursday about the worsening hunger crisis across the Middle East and North Africa, revealing that more than 33 million people are suffering from hunger and food insecurity due to ongoing armed conflicts and continuous displacement.

In a report published on its official platform on X, the WFP stated that its core humanitarian operations in the region are now at risk of being suspended. It noted that food ration distributions and school meal programs could be halted unless immediate support in supplies and funding is secured.

The agency sounded the alarm over the potential humanitarian fallout, particularly in crisis-hit areas such as Gaza, Yemen, Syria, and Sudan, where millions are enduring dire living conditions. In a related development, the Government Media Office in Gaza announced that more than 115 people have died due to famine and malnutrition, as the humanitarian crisis deepens under an ongoing blockade.

The office emphasized that Gaza’s population requires at least 500,000 bags of flour per week to prevent a total collapse of the humanitarian situation. The WFP urged the international community to take urgent action to avert what it described as an “escalating humanitarian catastrophe,” stressing the need to secure immediate support to safeguard the lives of millions affected throughout the region.
