UN Reports Alarming Violence Against Journalists in Middle East

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, declared the Middle East one of the most perilous regions for journalists on the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, observed on November 2, Anadolu Agency revealed yesterday.

In 2023, 71 journalists and media workers were killed globally, with over 300 imprisoned. Turk highlighted that women journalists face heightened online harassment, often escalating to physical violence.

He noted the particularly high casualty rates among Palestinian journalists, urging for better protection. The report also emphasized that more than 80% of journalist killings remain unpunished, calling on governments to enhance protections and prosecute perpetrators. Turk described journalists as vital voices amid global crises, reinforcing the urgent need for their safety and the accountability of those who attack them.
