UNESCO Celebrates World Radio Day Amid Technological Advancements

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) commemorated World Radio Day, emphasizing the medium’s enduring significance as it enters its second century, Khaama Press reported. Despite rapid technological changes, radio remains a reliable and accessible form of communication globally.

In a report released on February 13, UNESCO highlighted radio’s unique ability to adapt and provide crucial information during natural disasters, such as tropical storms and floods. The organization noted that while many new media platforms quickly become obsolete, radio continues to play a vital role in connecting communities and amplifying voices worldwide.

World Radio Day, declared by UNESCO in 2011 and officially recognized by the United Nations in 2012, is celebrated annually on February 13. It honors radio as one of the oldest forms of mass media, crucial for promoting freedom of expression and access to information.

However, the situation in Afghanistan poses a stark contrast. Since the Taliban’s takeover, media restrictions have severely impacted radio operations, particularly affecting female journalists. The Taliban has prohibited women’s voices on radio in several provinces, leading to job losses and diminishing media diversity.

UNESCO’s acknowledgment of these challenges underscores the ongoing struggle for freedom of expression and the importance of safeguarding media independence globally.
