The Secretary-General of the United Nations has paid tribute to dozens of UN staff members who lost their lives while carrying out humanitarian missions over the past year.

The aid workers and peacekeepers, who were working to ease human suffering and support stability in different parts of the world, were killed while performing their humanitarian duties in conflict-affected and high-risk areas.

According to Kabul-based newspaper Hasht-e Subh, António Guterres said that 136 UN personnel had died while serving in some of the most difficult and unstable places on earth.

The UN Secretary-General emphasized that these peace workers continued their missions despite fully understanding the dangers they faced, because they believed that improving the world requires sacrifice, dedication and selfless service.
