Dozens Missing After Migrant Boat Capsizes Off Libya, IOM Says
………..
At least 42 migrants are missing and presumed dead after a rubber boat capsized off the coast of Libya, Reuters reported on Wednesday. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said Libyan authorities rescued seven survivors who had been adrift for six days after their vessel sank near the Al Buri oilfield, northwest of the Libyan coast.
According to IOM, the boat was carrying 49 people from Sudan, Nigeria, Cameroon, and Somalia. Libya remains a key transit point for migrants attempting to reach Europe across the Mediterranean, a route that has claimed thousands of lives since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
The IOM said the number of migrants who drowned in the central Mediterranean this year has already surpassed 1,000, with 2,452 deaths recorded across the entire region. The agency said the latest tragedy highlights the ongoing dangers along the Central Mediterranean Route.
Recent months have seen multiple deadly incidents, including shipwrecks near Surman, Lampedusa, and Tripoli, where dozens of bodies have been recovered.
