UN Secretary-General Concerned by Decline in Women’s Role in Global Peace and Security

The declining participation of women in global peace and security efforts is a serious concern for the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres.

Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting, Guterres stressed that women must play a more active role in drafting peace agreements, security reforms, and post-conflict reconstruction programs.

According to the Shia Waves Agency, citing the UN’s website, the meeting was held ahead of the 25th anniversary of the landmark Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security.

The Secretary-General added that despite this resolution inspiring hundreds of subsequent resolutions, reports, and discussions, the role of women in peace and security matters has actually decreased in some parts of the world. He concluded by calling for urgent and decisive international action to reverse this trend.
