UN-WFP Warns of Rising Hunger in 13 Global Hotspots, with 5 Facing Imminent Famine

The United Nations’ World Food Programme (WFP) has issued a stark warning about escalating hunger in 13 critical hotspots worldwide, with five nations at immediate risk of famine and death.

The latest Hunger Hotspots report, released in partnership with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), emphasizes the urgent need for coordinated international humanitarian action to de-escalate conflict, reduce displacement, and deliver comprehensive aid, Africanews reported.

WFP’s Director of Food Security and Nutrition Analysis, Jean-Martin Bauer, identified conflict as the primary driver of these crises. The most urgent concerns are in Sudan, South Sudan, Palestine, Mali, and Haiti. In Sudan, nearly 25 million people face acute food insecurity amid ongoing conflict between the army and paramilitary forces, compounded by displacements. South Sudan is threatened by political tensions, flooding, and economic issues, with nearly 60% of the population expected to experience food insecurity from April to July.

In Gaza, ongoing military operations hinder aid deliveries, heightening famine risk. Haiti faces record gang violence, displacing communities and severely limiting access to humanitarian assistance, with over 8,400 internally displaced persons suffering from catastrophically high food insecurity. The report warns that funding shortages will further reduce aid and worsen conditions in these vulnerable regions.

Other hotspots include Yemen, the DRC, Myanmar, and Nigeria, while several countries have been removed from the list due to improved conditions.
