Humanitarian Crisis Deepens in Lebanon and Sudan

The humanitarian situation in Lebanon is rapidly deteriorating, with Prime Minister Najib Mikati warning that up to 1 million people could be displaced amid ongoing conflict, Arab News reported yesterday.

Raouf Mazou, UNHCR Assistant High Commissioner for Operations, highlighted a “massive increase in displacement,” urging the international community to overcome its “crisis fatigue” and provide essential support.

Intensified Israeli airstrikes against Hezbollah have exacerbated the crisis, prompting around 80,000 Lebanese to flee to Syria in the past week. Tragically, two UNHCR workers were killed in the violence, underscoring the dangers faced by humanitarian personnel.

Meanwhile, in Sudan, over 10 million people have been forcibly displaced due to a civil war that has led to severe hunger crises. Filippo Grandi, UNHCR High Commissioner, described conditions in Sudan as “apocalyptic,” calling for urgent donor support.

The UNHCR is preparing an appeal for international assistance, emphasizing the critical need for resources to aid vulnerable populations in both Lebanon and Sudan. Without immediate action, the risks of famine, violence, and further displacement are likely to escalate.
