Muslims in Ukraine Observe Ramadan Amid War

Despite the ongoing war with Russia, thousands of Muslims in Ukraine are observing Ramadan, Rudaw reported. For many, fasting serves as a source of solace for both the soul and mind.

Some Muslim officers in the Ukrainian army reflect on their experiences, noting that reading the Quran has provided them with comfort.

Approximately 20,000 Muslims serve in the Ukrainian military, with many stationed at the frontlines. They often find moments to pray and break their fast at the mosque during their breaks. In Kyiv, several Islamic centers facilitate religious gatherings for people of all ages, fostering a sense of community.

The Muslim population in Ukraine is diverse, with many hailing from regions such as Crimea, Azerbaijan, Palestine, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and various Arab countries. Before the war, around 1.5 million Muslims resided in Ukraine, but the ongoing conflict has led to a significant number leaving the country.
