Ebba Busch, leader of Sweden’s Christian Democrats party, has publicly advocated for a ban on wearing the niqab and burqa in public spaces. In statements to Aftonbladet, Busch framed the issue as part of a “cultural war” against what she termed “naivety towards Islamism,” arguing that certain practices are incompatible with Swedish values.

The proposed ban would cover streets, public squares, shopping centers, and health facilities. Busch emphasized the need for face-to-face interaction in public, stating, “When I go to the store or take my children to the health center, I do not want to see a person who covers their entire face.”

She stressed that while individuals are free to be Muslim, Christian, or Atheist, fundamental Swedish values must apply to everyone, particularly the absolute principle of gender equality. This proposal is part of a broader party plan for promoting “social harmony” and is scheduled for formal presentation at the party’s conference in November.
