Spanish Opposition Leader Proposes Ban on Niqab and Burqa in Public
……………..
Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of Spain’s opposition Popular Party, has called for a ban on the niqab and burqa in public spaces, arguing that garments covering the entire body compromise women’s dignity and safety. Feijóo emphasized that his party supports this measure, noting that countries such as France, Belgium, and Austria have adopted similar laws.
He distinguished his stance from that of the far-right Vox party, which has proposed extending restrictions to include the hijab, arguing that wearing it should remain legal as it does not violate women’s rights or endanger their safety.
The debate comes amid renewed political discussions in Spain over religious clothing.
In June, Vox submitted a proposal to parliament to prohibit Islamic attire, including the hijab, in schools, universities, hospitals, sports venues, and other public spaces, with plans to extend it to regional legislatures. Feijóo’s position maintains a distinction between full-face coverings and the hijab, defending the latter as compatible with public life.
