Anti-Migrant Violence Erupts for Second Night in Southern Spain

Several people were injured during a second night of anti-migrant unrest in Torre Pacheco, south-east Spain, following the assault of a local pensioner. Regional media reported that groups armed with batons roamed the streets looking for migrants, despite a strong police presence.

The violence began after a 68-year-old man said he was attacked by three young men of North African origin, with video of the assault circulating on social media. A peaceful demonstration organized by the town hall on Friday was overshadowed by far-right groups chanting anti-migrant slogans. One group called “Deport Them Now” posted calls for attacks online.

Authorities have urged calm in the town of 36,000. The regional president, Fernando López Miras, acknowledged public anger but condemned the violence. Mayor Pedro Angel Roca Ternel called for residents to remain peaceful, while Youth Minister Sira Rego blamed the far-right for fueling tensions. At least one person has been arrested.
