Portugal Declares Mourning After Deadly Lisbon Funicular Crash
………….
Portugal has declared a national day of mourning following a deadly cable car accident in Lisbon that killed at least 17 people and injured around 20 others, according to a report by the BBC. The Glória funicular, a 140-year-old tourist attraction, derailed on Wednesday evening near Liberty Avenue and collided with a building.
Authorities believe a brake failure or detached cable may have caused the crash. Several passengers, including foreign nationals, were trapped and later rescued. Some of the injured remain in critical condition. Lisbon’s mayor called it a tragic day, while officials have launched an investigation into the incident.
Public transport operator Carris stated it had followed all maintenance protocols, with the last interim service conducted last year. All other funicular lines in the city have been temporarily suspended for inspection. European leaders have expressed condolences, including Portugal’s President and Spain’s Prime Minister, who called the incident devastating.
