Portugal strengthens citizenship regulations
———————————-
The Portuguese government has strengthened its citizenship requirements by doubling the residency duration and imposing stricter rules on family reunification, Anadolu Agency reported.
On Monday, officials decided to increase the minimum residency period needed to apply for citizenship from 5 to 10 years. However, Brazilians and other Portuguese-speaking nationals may qualify after 7 years, according to local reports.
Family reunification will also be limited, permitting only immigrants who have held a residence permit in Portugal for at least two years to bring their spouses.
Entry requirements for immigrants will become more stringent, with applicants assessed on their knowledge of Portuguese culture and language. Additionally, work visas will be restricted to highly qualified candidates.
The government also plans to expand the conditions under which nationality can be revoked, especially in cases involving criminal behavior.
