Hundreds of people protested in Utrecht, the Netherlands, on Thursday after video footage circulated showing a Dutch police officer assaulting two Muslim women, sparking accusations of racist violence and excessive force. The incident, which took place earlier this week near the Hoog Catharijne shopping centre, has drawn widespread attention and criticism.

Video shared on social media shows a police officer using a baton on one woman and kicking another in the stomach during an arrest. According to widely shared videos, the incident began after a woman was stopped by police following an altercation inside a shop. When another woman attempted to film the interaction, a police officer appeared to kick her, escalating tensions at the scene. Activists said the women were targeted because they were wearing hijab.

Demonstrators gathered at Vredenburg Square, condemning what they described as “racist police violence” and “systemic discrimination” against Muslim women. Protesters chanted slogans including “No justice, no peace” and called for the suspension of the officer involved, a public apology to the victims, and measures to prevent similar incidents. Many marchers later proceeded toward the Paardenveld police station.

Dutch police confirmed an investigation into the incident, stating that all available video footage will be reviewed. A spokesperson acknowledged that the footage had triggered “strong emotions and many questions,” particularly regarding racism. One of the women’s lawyer said the officer made remarks such as “You don’t belong in this country” and that both women sustained injuries and are receiving medical treatment.

The footage reignited debate in the Netherlands and across Europe over religious discrimination and policing practices toward Muslim minorities.

The protests come amid rising debates across Europe about religious freedom and discrimination. Several European countries, including Austria and France, have tighten their restrictions on Islamic expression and identity, with bans on hijab and other religious symbols.
