Italian Version of “Mamdani” in Rome: Formation of the First Muslim Political Group for the 2027 Mayoral Election
———————————————-
The Muslim community in Rome has launched the group “MuRo27” (Muslims for Rome 2027), inspired by the success of Mamdani, New York’s first Muslim mayor, with the aim of participating in the 2027 mayoral elections in an organized way and establishing a stronger role in local and national politics.
According to Shia Waves Persian, political and social developments in Rome indicate that the city’s Muslim community has entered a new phase of collective political engagement.
Italian media report that MuRo27 draws inspiration from Mamdani’s achievements and seeks to ensure structured participation in the 2027 mayoral race. This initiative is seen as an opportunity to strengthen democratic participation among Muslims and to represent the urban needs of the community.
The group is built around a network of civil activists, cultural centers, and local mosques, aiming to actively involve Rome’s Muslim population in municipal decision-making. Italian media highlight that MuRo27 is modeled on the successful political participation of minority communities in the West, intending to replicate a similar approach in Rome.
Rome’s Muslim population is estimated at around 111,000, about one-third of whom are Italian citizens. The community’s diverse composition—including Moroccans, Bangladeshis, Egyptians, Pakistanis, and Albanians—is seen as an opportunity to increase political engagement.
The experience of the town of Monfalcone has served as a small but inspiring precedent for the formation of MuRo27.
Reactions to this initiative have been mixed. Some right-wing Italian groups have raised concerns about “political Islam,” but media sources stress that MuRo27 is focusing on urban development programs, social justice, and civic participation.
For instance, Francesco Tiri, a project activist and recent convert to Islam, told Italian media that the goal of MuRo27 is to “increase the political and civic participation of Muslims in Rome.”
This initiative could serve as a pioneering model for the involvement of Muslims in local Italian politics.
