Italy Navigates Fair Compensation, AI, and Free Speech Under EU Publisher Directive

The implementation of the EU’s press publisher rights directive presents both opportunities and challenges for Italy, Anadolu Agency reported citing Giulia Li Greci, legal director of the state-run news agency ANSA. In a recent interview, she emphasized the directive’s potential to ensure fair compensation for publishers while addressing critical issues of freedom of expression and the impact of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI).

Li Greci highlighted that the directive aims to enhance the quality of information by recognizing the rights of publishers in the digital landscape. “The implementation will have a huge impact on publishers because the purpose is to guarantee the quality of information,” she stated.

However, concerns over freedom of expression remain. Li Greci acknowledged the complexities involved, particularly regarding the obligations placed on service providers and publishers. She also expressed the need for updates to the directive, suggesting that insights from the European Court of Justice would be valuable before any judgments are made.

Additionally, she addressed challenges posed by AI-generated content, noting the importance of data mining and the necessity for publishers to protect their content effectively. As Italy navigates these multifaceted issues, the balance between fair compensation, free speech, and technological advancements remains a critical focus.
