Muslim Cemetery to Open in Sicily for Migrants

A new cemetery for Muslims is set to open in Palma di Montechiaro, Sicily, primarily serving as a burial site for Muslim migrants who die while attempting to reach Italy by sea, Info Migrants reported yesterday.

The agreement to establish this cemetery was signed by Prefect Filippo Romano and Mayor Stefano Castellino, the source mentioned.

Next week, three imams will visit the site to discuss the design of the gate and the overall decoration of the area. The cemetery, covering over 1,000 square meters, is expected to open between September and October and will accommodate up to 370 burials, with potential for future expansion if necessary.

Previously, migrants who lost their lives at sea were interred in nearby Messina.
