BAMF Estimate Puts Muslim Population in Germany at Up to 7 Million

A new estimate by Germany’s Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) puts the number of Muslims in Germany at between 6.6 and 7 million in 2025, or about 8 to 8.5 percent of the population.

The BAMF Research Centre said the figure marks an increase from its previous 2019 estimate of 5.3 to 5.6 million Muslims. The latest estimate covers Muslims with a migration background from predominantly Muslim countries and is based on demographic data and the BAMF’s research on Muslim life in Germany.

The increase is attributed in significant part to immigration from Muslim-majority countries, including conflict-affected regions of the Middle East. The study also found that Germany’s Muslim population has become increasingly diverse in terms of countries and regions of origin. People of Turkish origin remain the largest group, accounting for 39.4 percent, while 29.4 percent have backgrounds in Arab-speaking countries in the Middle East and North Africa.

The Central Council of Muslims in Germany welcomed the figures, with its chairman, Abd al-Samad al-Yazidi, calling for equal participation and recognition of Muslims as an established part of German society.
