Power Restored in Southwest Berlin After Weeklong Blackout
………..

Electricity has been fully restored in southwest Berlin following a five-day blackout, the longest in the city since 1945, Anadolu Agency reports. The outage, affecting around 100,000 residents and 2,200 businesses, was caused by a suspected far-left extremist arson attack on a cable bridge in the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district, prompting a state of emergency in the capital.

Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner and Energy Senator Franziska Giffey expressed relief at the restoration, describing the complex repair work as “open-heart surgery.” A total of 170 technicians and specialists worked around the clock to repair high-voltage cables and establish a temporary connection, completing the restoration a day and a half ahead of schedule.

Despite the restoration of power, schools in affected areas remain closed for the week as authorities conduct technical checks. The German Armed Forces and local crisis teams continue to provide support, including emergency shelters and hot meals for residents.

Authorities announced plans to enhance protection of critical infrastructure. Berlin intends to monitor all vulnerable above-ground power lines with cameras and sensors, while increasing police presence at critical sites. Fences and other protective measures are already in place, and further security enhancements are being considered.

Experts have raised concerns about the vulnerability of Germany’s infrastructure, noting the lack of backup systems and redundancy. Analysts emphasized that a single cable attack paralyzed a large portion of the city for several days, highlighting the need for improved surveillance, preventive measures, and investment in critical infrastructure protection.

The Federal Prosecutor’s Office has taken over the investigation into the attack. The Vulkangruppe, a far-left extremist group, has claimed responsibility, with suspects accused of sabotage, disruption of public services, and membership in a terrorist organization. The incident has renewed calls for stronger safeguards against potential threats to essential urban infrastructure.
