Germany Sees 55% Drop in Asylum Applications as Deportations Accelerate Under New Policy

Germany has reported a 55% decline in asylum applications this year amid the implementation of tougher migration rules and an expanded deportation program, according to Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, Khaama Press reported.

Citing data from the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, Dobrindt said asylum requests in October fell by more than half compared to the same month last year, with applications reaching a low of 6,860 in June, a 59% decrease year-on-year. Overall, asylum filings have dropped by around 51% compared with three years ago.

Dobrindt told Bild am Sonntag that recent policy reforms have “significantly reduced the drivers of illegal migration,” while confirming that Germany will continue to accelerate deportations of rejected asylum seekers. The government’s return program now targets both criminal migrants and those whose claims have been denied.

The ministry has also begun reassessing asylum procedures for Syrian nationals, aligning with wider EU efforts to coordinate deportations and strengthen external migration controls.

European analysts note Germany’s approach mirrors stricter migration measures in Austria, Denmark, and the Netherlands.
