Germany Ten Years After the Refugee Wave: From “We Can Do It” to New Challenges
——————————-
A decade after the arrival of hundreds of thousands of refugees from Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq, Germany’s public atmosphere has profoundly shifted.

According to Deutsche Welle, while in 2015 the influx was met with unforgettable scenes of public solidarity at Munich’s train station, migration has now become one of the country’s most contentious political issues.

Many refugees have still not fully entered the labor market, and debates over crime—both by migrants and against them—have intensified.

Chancellor Angela Merkel’s historic phrase, “We can do it”, no longer resonates as strongly, with German society deeply divided between solidarity and opposition.

The situation has even shaped Germany’s foreign policy, fueling broader debates on the future of Europe, border control, and the country’s ability to uphold humanitarian values while safeguarding social security.
