Germany Suspends Afghan Refugee Transfers from Pakistan

Germany has paused Afghan refugee transfers from Pakistan for two weeks until its new coalition government takes office, affecting thousands awaiting relocation, Khaama Press reported. The decision, announced on Wednesday, follows public protests over migration policies after violent attacks linked to migrants.

Since 2021, Germany has accepted 36,000 Afghans through resettlement programs for former local employees of German institutions and vulnerable groups. Approximately 2,600 individuals—including 350 ex-staff—remain in Pakistan awaiting transfer. The Foreign Ministry confirmed that issued transfer documents remain legally binding unless exceptional circumstances arise.

Recent chartered flights have faced criticism from conservative politicians. Rights groups like Pro Asyl warn the suspension endangers at-risk refugees, urging prompt action. The new government will review policies to balance security and humanitarian obligations.

Pakistan hosts over 1.3 million Afghan refugees, with labor shortages prompting calls for work permits. Meanwhile, the ICRC warns forced returns worsen Afghanistan’s poverty crisis.
