Germany to Strengthen Migration Controls, Upholding Asylum Rights

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced new measures to combat irregular migration while affirming that asylum rights will remain intact, Anadolu Agency reported yesterday.

Responding to pressure from opposition parties, particularly the Christian Democrats (CDU), Scholz rejected calls for a freeze on accepting refugees from Syria and Afghanistan. He emphasized that Germany will adhere to international treaties and its own constitution.

To address rising concerns following a recent stabbing attack by a rejected Syrian asylum seeker, Scholz outlined plans for increased police controls at borders and stricter deportation processes for violent offenders. He acknowledged challenges in deporting illegal migrants and expressed a commitment to finding solutions for repatriating serious offenders to Afghanistan and Syria.

Opposition leaders, including CDU’s Friedrich Merz, demanded swift action, advocating for immediate deportations of criminal immigrants. The far-right AfD party called for a five-year immigration moratorium, targeting specific nationalities with high crime rates. Scholz maintains that measures against illegal migrants should not undermine protections for genuine refugees.
